WHY DID YOU COME TO JAPAN?
…SERENITY
I am Nader Sammouri—an architect, writer, and tour guide who has called Japan home for nearly a decade. Originally from Lebanon, I am often asked what first brought me here. The answer usually begins with the visible qualities: Japan’s refined aesthetic sensibility, its respect for discipline, and its enduring sense of honor. Yet over the years, I have come to realize that these explanations only touch the surface.
What truly drew me to Japan was something more subtle—a quiet spiritual affinity shaped by Shinto-influenced restraint and a humble, attentive relationship with the natural world. There is a particular quality to Japanese culture that resists self-assertion. Japan does not demand admiration; it invites stillness. And within that stillness, I found a reason to stay.
Through my privately guided tours, I hope to share some of these reflections and observations—not as definitive answers, but as gentle insights into the culture, aesthetics, and underlying philosophies that continue to make Japan such a fascinating and meaningful place to explore.
90+ Published Articles - 7 Countries
I have written over 90 articles about Japan, published across seven countries in English, focusing on design, philosophy, psychology, and culture.
I read widely, and writing is a way for me to complete the conversation. Reading feeds me; writing is how I respond.

TEDx ShimaneU, Japan
I had the honor of delivering a TEDx talk in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, Japan, exploring philosophical reflections. A moment I still smile about happened during the mandatory rehearsal the day before. As I practiced on stage, I was using my hands quite expressively, and one of the organizers gently asked if I could be “less aggressive” with my gestures. It was a small but memorable reminder of Japan’s softer, more restrained approach to communication—something I still find myself learning and adjusting to.
